Real Wedding: Chris & Rebecca’s Stunning Lake District Tipi Wedding at Brathay Hall

Nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere, Brathay Hall provided the perfect backdrop for Chris and Rebecca’s unforgettable Lake District wedding. Blessed with glorious sunshine and surrounded by some of Cumbria’s most spectacular scenery, their celebration combined relaxed elegance, breathtaking views, and a stunning tipi reception that allowed guests to fully embrace the beauty of the outdoors.

Located in the heart of the South Lake District, Brathay Hall is one of our favourite wedding venues in Cumbria. Owned by the Brathay Trust, the venue offers exclusive use of the historic hall and grounds, alongside a dedicated lakeside event space that is ideal for both Giant Hat Tipis and Sailcloth Marquees. With Lake Windermere just moments away and panoramic views across the surrounding fells, it is easy to see why it has become such a sought-after venue for couples planning a Lake District wedding.

For their reception, Chris and Rebecca chose a configuration of three interconnected Giant Hat Tipis, complete with an attached catering tent. One of the standout features of their setup was the use of open sides, creating a seamless connection between the tipi interior and the stunning countryside beyond. Guests were free to wander between the outdoor spaces and the tipi itself, enjoying the warm summer weather while taking in the incredible views across the Brathay estate.

Their wedding day began in true Lake District style. While Rebecca and her bridal party enjoyed a relaxed morning of preparations, Chris and his groomsmen embraced the outdoors with an early morning swim in Lake Windermere following their park run. The ceremony took place at nearby Brathay Church, just a short walk from the reception venue, allowing guests to enjoy a wonderfully relaxed and local celebration without the need for extensive travel between locations.

Following the ceremony, everyone returned to Brathay Hall where the tipis were waiting in the sunshine. With Hugo Spritz cocktails, Espresso Martinis from Kindred Spirits Cocktails and plenty of laughter flowing throughout the afternoon, the atmosphere perfectly reflected the couple’s vision for the day, relaxed, welcoming and completely authentic to who they are.

The natural textures and striking architecture of the Giant Hat Tipis worked beautifully alongside the surrounding landscape. On a warm summer’s day, opening the sides of the tipis creates a unique experience that traditional venues simply cannot replicate. Guests can enjoy the shelter and character of the structure while still feeling immersed in the scenery that makes the Lake District such a special place to celebrate.

As the evening unfolded, guests enjoyed exceptional food, live music and dancing long into the night. With the sun setting over the fells and the warm glow of the tipis creating an intimate atmosphere, Chris and Rebecca’s wedding perfectly captured everything we love about outdoor weddings in Cumbria.
